Are you ready to build power with Asian youth and create lasting impact in Spokane?

Asians for Collective Liberation (ACL Spokane) and Asians for Collective Action (ACA Spokane) is hiring an Advocacy Coordinator. This is an entry-level, part-time contractor position supporting both ACL and ACA, and its civic engagement and advocacy work, with a particular focus on engaging youth and young adults. If you’re passionate about social justice, youth leadership, and making change through cultural art, environmental justice, storytelling and civic engagement, we want to hear from you!

This is an entry-level opportunity designed for individuals who are early in their civic engagement, advocacy, or community organizing journey. We especially encourage college students, emerging community leaders, and applicants interested in gaining hands-on experience in civic engagement and advocacy to apply.

The Advocacy Coordinator will support outreach and engagement with young people, helping connect them with opportunities to learn about issues affecting their communities, participate in civic life, and take action on local and statewide issues, with a focus on Asian and Asian American communities.

The Coordinator will work closely with ACA and ACL staff. Training, guidance, and support will be provided. Previous professional political or legislative experience is not required.

Compensation: $28/hour
Hours: Up to 10 hours per week
Contract Period: September–December 2026, with the potential to extend depending on funding.
Status: Independent Contractor
Experience: No prior professional experience required. Ideal for college students and emerging community leaders interested in gaining hands-on civic engagement and advocacy experience.
Location: Spokane, Washington; hybrid with local in-person activities

The core responsibilities include:

Advocacy & Civic Engagement (55%)

  • Support civic engagement efforts and activities relating to issues affecting Asian and Asian American communities in the Spokane area, including immigration, racial justice, economic justice, environmental justice, climate resilience, conservation, public health, and other community-identified priorities
  • Help connect young and other people with opportunities such as voter education, voter registration, advocacy events, legislative activities, community meetings, candidate forums, and other civic engagement opportunities.
  • Support Youth Organizer to AYCL fellowship cohort members each year 
  • Work closely with Youth Organizer on the design and execution of an annual Youth Organizing Summit that builds foundational youth organizing skills and highlights leadership, culture, and community priorities.
  • Support outreach and participation in Get Out the Vote activities and other advocacy campaigns as appropriate to ACA or ACL.
  • Help make civic and political information more understandable and accessible
  • Gather feedback from young people about issues that matter to them and share emerging interests or concerns with ACA and ACL staff.
  • Participate in advocacy opportunities such as community meetings, legislative events, Lobby Day, public testimony, canvassing, or grassroots outreach with guidance from staff.
  • Help identify opportunities for young people to take leadership and participate in civic life.

 

Community Outreach & Communications (25%)

  • Conduct outreach to youth groups, community organizations, local businesses, and other community partners, including organizations working on environmental justice, conservation, climate justice, immigration, and issues affecting immigrant and refugee communities. Support related research, community education, storytelling, and opportunities for young people to engage with local, state, and federal policy issues
  • Promote ACA and ACL programs, advocacy opportunities, events, and resources that are relevant to our communities.
  • Help develop youth-friendly civic engagement content for social media, newsletters, flyers, and other outreach materials.
  • Research civic engagement topics and help translate complex information into clear, accessible language.
  • Support tabling, presentations, campus events, and community outreach activities.
  • Build relationships with school clubs, local organizations/businesses, campus programs, and other groups serving young people
  • Build relationships with community organizations, environmental organizations, cultural organizations, immigrant and refugee-serving organizations, and other partners when relevant to ACA and ACL’s advocacy priorities.

 

Events & Cross-Team Support (10%)

  • Contribute to grant reporting, budgeting, billing, and compliance tasks, including data, stories, and documentation to funders.
  • Provide staffing support for ACA and ACL events, including tabling, event setup, participant outreach, and welcoming community members.
  • Participate in team discussions and provide a young adult perspective on programs, communications, and advocacy activities.
  • Support planning and implementation of other activities involving youth and community engagement. 
  • Support community education events, environmental justice and conservation activities, advocacy events, legislative engagement, and other opportunities that connect young people with issues affecting their communities.
  • Participate in Organization wide planning and other related community engagement projects based on organizational needs and available contracted hours.

 

Administrative and Grant Support (10%)

  • Track project hours and submit accurate and timely invoices or timesheets.
  • Maintain basic outreach and participation records 
  • Help collect event feedback and information needed for program or grant reporting.
  • Attend check-ins and coordinate work priorities with the Civic Engagement Program Lead. 
  • Follow organizational policies related to advocacy activities, communications, safety, and data management.

 

Core Competencies, Experience, and Knowledge

We’re looking for someone who is passionate about developing and organizing youth leadership for collective change. You should bring a strong understanding of Asian American youth in the Spokane region, and have a natural ability to bring together people toward shared work. No candidate will meet every requirement. If you’re excited about the position and think you may be a good candidate, we encourage you to apply.

  • Lived experience within the Asian/Asian American community; fluency in an Asian language is welcomed, but not required. 
  • Experience gained through school, volunteering, community involvement, cultural and civic organizations, family, lived experience, or other nontraditional settings is valued.
  • Experience with social media platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Youtube and ability to develop engaging, mission aligned, and branded content. 
  • Experience creating compelling short-form video content (e.g., TikTok, Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts) to engage and communicate with youth audiences. Sophisticated approach to using storytelling to inspire action and connection.
  • Interest and basic understanding of  civic engagement, advocacy, community organizing, and social justice.
  • Interest in issues affecting Asian and Asian American communities and young people.
  • Commitment to racial, social, immigration, economic, and environmental justice.
  • Interest in understanding how environmental, immigration, economic, and other public policies intersect with the experiences of Asian, immigrant, refugee, and other historically marginalized communities.
  • Interest in learning how local and state government, elections, public policy, and advocacy work.
  • Comfortable reaching out to peers, student groups, and community members.
  • Ability to communicate clearly through writing, conversation, social media, or other forms of outreach.
  • Organized and able to manage responsibilities with guidance while working independently when needed.
  • Willingness to ask questions, receive feedback, and learn new skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with people from different backgrounds and experiences.
  • Familiarity with social media and basic digital tools such as Google Workspace is helpful.
  • Ability to collaborate and thoughtfully receive and integrate feedback from peers, partners, and the community. Ability to recognize one’s own capacity, boundaries, and self-care needs and to seek support when needed.
  • Previous volunteer, school, campus, organizing, advocacy, or community engagement experience is welcomed but not required.

ACA and ACL operates in a hybrid working environment and has an office in Spokane. Staff must reside in the Spokane region. The Advocacy Coordinator will be expected to be present for events and activities in Spokane County that will include some evening and weekend commitments.
